Friday 14th March
Year 3 have been busy in our Science lessons becoming petrologists! We found out that that scientist study rocks while geologists study the science of the Earth and its rocks. We have been devising our own fair tests for the hardness of rocks and putting rock samples such as marble, granite, slate, limestone, chalk and sandstone in rank order of hardness. We have also been devising our own fair tests for permeability of these rocks.
Linking with our learning in Science, we have been finding out about Mountains, Volcanoes and Earthquakes in Geography this term. We have been learning about the structure of the Earth and the three main layers: the core, mantle and crust. Conor made a fantastic model out of playdough to show the different layers. We found out all about plate tectonics and used a world map to locate the major tectonic plates and showed our learning by completing a jigsaw.
