Philosophy

Philosophy at Saint Christina’s

At Saint Christina’s, we believe children flourish when they are given the chance to wonder, to ask questions, and to think deeply about the world around them. Our whole school philosophy programme gives every child those opportunities in a structured, engaging way.

What are Sticky Questions?

Each week, children are introduced to a Sticky Question,  a short, thought-provoking idea designed to spark conversation both in school and at home. Sticky Questions encourage children to think beyond the obvious, share their views, and listen to the perspectives of others.

Six Themes

Our Sticky Questions and lessons are grouped into six themes:

Ethics (Right and Wrong): fairness, choices, and how we should treat one another
Beauty and Art: what makes something beautiful, creative, or artistic
Epistemology (Knowledge, Belief, and Truth): what we know, how we know it, and whether something can be true or false
Metaphysics (Existence and Reality): what things are, what is real, and how the world is made up
Technology: inventions, tools, and how people use them
Politics: rules, leaders, communities, and how people live together

How it works

Lessons begin with a story to capture the imagination, then move to the Sticky Question at the heart of the enquiry. Children explore different angles through “what if” scenarios and alternative viewpoints, before joining a respectful discussion. The goal is not to find one right answer, but to learn how to listen carefully, express ideas clearly, and value different perspectives.

Why it matters

Philosophy at Saint Christina’s equips children with the tools to ask big questions, think critically, and reflect thoughtfully on their own ideas. These skills enrich their learning across all subjects and nurture confident, articulate young people who can engage with the world around them.
